Tri-state group studies contributions of black artists
J.M. Wright Technical High School was one of ten schools and art organizations from the tri-state area invited by Parsons School of Design at the New School to participate in an educators consortium where they shared collective strategies, resources, and opportunities for continuing to build educational practices and scholarship around Black art and design.
Art instructor Karen Harris and Library Media Department Head Christine Leventhal represented Wright Tech and presented an overview of our school and its Art and Digital Media Programs as well as shared examples of student work. Design professors Kelly Walters and Jennifer Rittner co-chaired the event and shared their publication, The Black Experience in Design, which was written with the goal of providing more resources to educators – in higher education and K12 – who are teaching students about the histories and practices of art and design from across the Black diaspora.
They developed an Educators’ Library of 18 other books centering on Black experiences in art and design which they presented to each attending group. The books will be made available to staff and students at Wright Tech.
