Digital distraction targeted with new policy
Principal Jayme Beckham, Ed.D has changed the school’s cell phone policy to reflect an increased focus on improving classroom climate and eliminating digital distractions. The following is an excerpt from the new policy to take effect in January 2026.
______________________________
Over the past few years, Wright Tech has implemented a policy that restricts cell phone use during instructional time. This approach has been helpful in reducing some classroom distractions and supporting student focus. However, it has not been fully effective or conducive to creating the strong, consistent learning environment we strive to provide for all students.
Research consistently shows that cell phone use in schools negatively impacts student learning, attention, and academic performance. Studies indicate that even the presence of a cell phone can reduce focus, increase anxiety, and interfere with meaningful engagement. Schools that have adopted full-day cell phone restrictions report improved student attention, increased classroom participation, stronger peer relationships, and fewer disciplinary disruptions.
After careful review of this research, feedback from staff, and observations of our learning environment, Wright Tech will be moving to a no cell phone use during the school day policy beginning after winter break. This change is designed to promote student learning, reduce distractions, and foster a more respectful and connected school community.
Our goal is not punishment, but growth. By eliminating cell phone use throughout the day, we are prioritizing instructional time, social interaction, and student well-being. We appreciate the support of students, families, and staff as we work together to strengthen our learning environment.
Additional details and expectations are below:
- Cell phones are not to be visible during the school day between 7:20 a.m. and 2:10 p.m. Upon arrival, cell phones must be turned off and securely put away. Students can keep cell phones in their backpacks or lockers, but they must be out of sight. This includes during passing time and lunch waves.
- Related technology like earbuds, bluetooth speakers, Smartwatches, etc. should also be powered off and out of sight for the duration of the school day.
- If cell phones or related technology are seen or used during the school day, the device(s) will be confiscated by administration and held until the end of the day where a parent will be notified and asked to pick up the device. In some cases, the device could be returned to the student at the end of the day, barring it’s not a repeat offense.
- We ask that you speak to your child about the importance of adhering to this policy as our goal is to maintain a focused learning environment and avoid unnecessary disciplinary incidents.
- If a parent has an emergency and needs to reach their child, please call the main office (which is now fully staffed) and we will arrange for your child to contact you (students will not be able to take phone calls or text during class).
