Shakespearean actors conduct workshops on “Romeo and Juliet”

Were Romeo and Juliet truly in love?
Given their circumstances, did they make good choices?
These were among the questions debated by Seniors who attended small workshops with Shakespeare on the Sound, a non-profit performing arts group based in Norwalk. Nick Urda, educational director for S.O.S, brought Actress Sophia Drapeau and Actor James Nash to perform for the students and facilitated conversation on the famous Shakespearean tragedy.
After the actors performed selected scenes, such as the famous balcony scene, Urda asked for students register whether they agreed, disagreed, or were unsure with a statement. Students debated whether Romeo and Juliet were really in love and made good choices given their circumstances. Among other topics was whether loyalty and love of family should come before romantic love.
English Instructors Marc Marin and Jessica Ginsburg invited S.O.S. as a culminating activity to their study of “Romeo and Juliet”.
“I was proud of the thoughtful reflection the seniors brought to these workshops. They wrestled with the themes of love, family, and acceptance that are present in the play, and had fascinating interchanges with the actors,” said Marin.
